Jenny Puranen + Mom of 2 + Photographer + Oak Park, California + Agoura Hills, California
Satellite Beach, Florida, The greater Los Angeles area, Agoura Hills, CA, Oak Park, California Photographer
Well we made it! We survived the adventures, highs and lows of our first 4 months in California. It has been incredibly hard, harder than expected but it also has been life changing in wonderful ways.
We ended up choosing Oak Park California 30 miles north or maybe west of Los Angeles (I still haven't figured which direction is which here) I do know its 10 miles from Malibu. This is where we end up spending most of our free time. We love it here our little quiet town is nestled in the Santa Monica Mountains. I still haven't gotten used to the quiet and seeing the stars outside freezing on cold nights
The region we now live is the polar opposite of where we came from in Florida. About the only thing in common is the heat mid day. Surrounded by the most incredible beauty seems like a photographers dream but I haven't figured out how to capture it. A camera just doesn't seem to be able to do it justice. Our house is surrounded by several Canyons with twisty turning roads slicing through the mountains.
I think we are all slowly adjusting, experiencing our first nearby wildfire of the fall fire season. We were never evacuated and never even had our power turned off. So in California terms this must mean we were never close to it. However the smoke is what surprised me. The day started off a mild smoke cover in the mountains and ended up making my children and I sick from the thick fumes. When I picked the kids up at school I noticed several people wearing (what I soon learned was a N95 face mask) protecting you from the ash and harmful particles you breathe in from the air. We now own these lovely accessories and are all signed up for alerts for the next Santa Ana Wind / Wildfire combination

SMOKE DRIFTS FROM THE SADDLERIDGE FIRE BEGINNING OF DAY / END OF DAY
Overall we love it. We have all 3 had breakdowns and fleeting moments of homesickness. During the fire when I was coughing from the smoke and ash I almost packed the car and drove away. The moments pass and I don't ever see us leaving this area by choice at least. If you are planning a trip to Los Angeles make sure to stop by and say Hi! Here is a must do list of my favorite things to do in the are:

Visit El Matador state beach for one of the worlds most beautiful beaches (just get ready to hike some steep stairs)
Have lunch with your toes in the sand at Paradise Cove Beach Cafe
