Look at that sweet baby boy and what thoughts come to your mind? The innocent sleepiness of a brand new baby warms the coldest of hearts. After a particularly rough year this year, followed by a rough week and this day in particular was starting off not on a good note. Valentines DAY 2019, Baby Noah's due date and after an early arrival this was the day I got to meet him and take his newborn photos.
The instant I got to hold Noah and see the smiles from big brother Ollie every other worry in the world vanished. It was pure euphoria for the next couple hours until it was time for baby Noah to go home. Even now looking at these photos just makes me happy. As I am writing this blog I looked up studies to see if there is a link to joy when holding a newborn baby. That may seem obvious but I wanted to find documented proof. I found not only does looking at a newborns photos or holding a newborn release dopamine and other chemicals that make you feel happy but its just as beneficial for the baby as well.
I found study after study of what is called "A baby High" between parents and their newborn baby. I thought for sure mothers instinctively had this but I was surprised about the number of fathers who found this chemical rush of happiness when holding their new babies. If you think about it, it is one of the sweetest studies you could read about. I even found a study linking the babies smell to the parents pleasure centers in the brain. I tried this out with my own kids (who are not babies but sometimes stinky post toddler years) I tried a few times smelling their little heads and without fail every time I found a rush of joy and love straight to my heart. So long story short if you need a pick me up, pick up a friends newborn baby. Not only will this benefit you emotionally but the new mother will most likely thank you so she can get a load of laundry done.
